Dog Ear Publishing releases “The Last Chance: Murder and Justice” by Herk Shriner.

A gunfighter and lawman takes justice into his own hands in this new book released by Dog Ear Publishing.

Deputy U.S. Marshall Chance Bowie is feeling his mortality and longs to find his family, and he’s got a clue with a 20-year-old old letter from his grandmother’s estate. Bowie, the star of this new novel, is on medical leave for a condition that is expected to kill him, so it’s now or never if he wants to locate his father, brother, sister and cousin. Against the backdrop of the heyday of the California Gold Rush, this tale features murder, adventure and a marshal’s idea of frontier justice.

“The Last Chance: Murder and Justice” takes place in Weaverville, a bustling mining town in 1894 that served as the county seat of rural Trinity County. The mammoth La Grange Mine, the world’s largest placer mine at the time, lures men hoping to strike it rich. Chance, a lawman, gunfighter and gambler, is used to being on the move, tracking down those wanted on warrants for the last 25 years. He learns that one of his siblings is dead but nobody knows who the killer is. He begins to find clues and decides to implement his own form of justice. As word spreads that the legendary gunslinger is in town, the gunfights and ambushes increase. When Chance meets someone who will change his life, he must take charge of his destiny.

Author Herk Shriner lives in Weaverville, a historic Gold Rush town in Northern California, and he grew up in small towns in that area. He worked in the telephone industry and construction contracting but has since chosen to research and write, as well as spending more time with his wife and three granddaughters. Shriner, an accomplished historian for E Clampus Vitus and the native Sons of California, has long been interested in history and the Gold Rush. This is the first volume in his United State Deputy Marshal series.
